Do Interior Designers Make You Spend More? A Sunderland E-Design Project

One of the biggest misconceptions about working with an interior designer is that they’ll simply encourage you to spend more.

Sometimes, the overall budget does increase slightly but good interior design is about making sure the money you do spend works much harder.

This recent e-design interior design project for a New Build in Ryhope, Sunderland is a perfect example.

The Brief: Creating a Warm, Japandi-Inspired Family Home

These clients reached out for help pulling together the pieces for their brand new home.

They had already started selecting furniture themselves and knew what they liked individually, but they weren't sure whether everything complemented each other or how to bring all of those ideas together into one cohesive space.

This is something I see regularly as an interior designer. You can find a sofa you love, a dining table you love and a beautiful light fitting but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll work together once they're all in the same room.

After chatting through how the clients wanted their home to look and, importantly, feel, we discovered they were really drawn towards Japandi-inspired interiors. They loved warm woods, natural textures, soft neutral colours and the calm, uncluttered feeling associated with Japandi design. With a new baby on the way, however, this couldn't just be a beautiful home. It needed to feel cosy, welcoming and practical for their growing family too.

Looking Beyond Individual Pieces

Rather than simply approving or replacing the furniture the clients had already selected, I looked at the room as a complete space.

We considered the scale and proportions of the furniture, how the different materials worked together, where additional texture was needed and how each area of the room could be used by the family. This meant introducing additional pieces that hadn't originally been included in their budget.

So, yes — technically, we spent more. But we also achieved significantly more.

For only a little more than the clients had originally planned to spend, we created a much more complete and considered interior rather than spending the majority of their budget on a handful of individual pieces.

Spending Your Interior Budget More Wisely

Working with an interior designer isn't always about buying more expensive furniture.

Often, it's about knowing where to spend and where to save.

A less expensive side table might allow us to invest more in the sofa you'll sit on every evening. Choosing a better-value dining chair might free up budget for lighting, a rug and accessories that completely transform how the room feels.

It's the overall balance that matters.

In this project, we were able to stretch the clients' budget across more of the room while making sure everything worked together aesthetically.

We also suggested styling pieces to complete the scheme. These weren't all immediate essentials and could easily be purchased over time.

By planning them from the beginning, though, the clients now have a clear roadmap. Instead of buying accessories randomly over the next year and potentially ending up with pieces that don't work, they know exactly what to look for when they're ready.

Interior Design Doesn't Have to Be All or Nothing

You don't necessarily need a full-service interior designer to benefit from professional design advice.

This project was completed through my e-design interior design service, which gives clients a professionally designed scheme that they can then implement themselves at their own pace.

It's particularly useful if you enjoy shopping for your own home and are happy to organise everything yourself, but need help making confident decisions about layout, furniture, colour, lighting and styling.

You still get the benefit of having your room considered as a complete design — without the cost of having an interior designer manage the entire project for you.

Does Hiring an Interior Designer Save You Money?

Sometimes, yes. But I think a better way to look at it is that an interior designer can help you get more from the money you're already planning to spend.

It's incredibly easy to spend thousands furnishing a room and still feel like something isn't quite right. Often, it's not because you need more expensive furniture — it's because the room hasn't been considered as a whole.

Sometimes spending a little more in the right places gets you a lot more from your space. And sometimes knowing where not to spend is just as valuable.
